JAMMU: In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing community well-being and healthcare accessibility, the Jammu and Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM), in collaboration with the J&K Health Department, organised a series of free health check-up camps for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across UT of J&K.
Under the leadership of Mission Director JKRLM, Dr. Shubhra Sharma, these health check-up camps were designed to provide comprehensive health assessments and screenings for members of Self-Help Groups associated with JKRLM, addressing the critical need for improved healthcare access within the community.
The initiative spans various districts across Jammu and Kashmir, uniting healthcare professionals and JKRLM staff to deliver essential services directly to SHG members. The camps emphasized preventive care, including general health assessments, screenings for common ailments, and educational sessions on nutrition and hygiene.
Speaking about the significance of such collaborative efforts in promoting community health, Mission Director JKRLM Dr. Shubhra Sharma highlighted, "These camps, rolled out as part of JKRLM’s broader mission to empower rural communities, provide essential medical screenings and consultations at no cost. Our goal is to ensure that every woman associated with the Mission has easy access to quality healthcare services."
The Mission Director emphasized the importance of community engagement and proactive health initiatives in fostering a healthier society, noting the positive impact of such programs on overall community development.
Dr. Shubhra Sharma, spearheading this initiative, underscored the importance of health as a cornerstone of economic and social empowerment, "Our Self-Help Groups play a vital role in the rural economy, and ensuring their health is a top priority. This collaboration with the Health Department reflects our commitment to holistic development", She Said.
ANANTNAG: In a significant development in the fight against drug trafficking, the Hon’ble Court of Special Judge designated under the NDPS Act, Anantnag has convicted five accused persons in case FIR No. 63/2022 U/S 8/20, 29 NDPS Act, registered at Police Station Kokernag. The convicted individuals are Mohammad Rafiq Bhat, Anayatullah Bhat, Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, Mubeena Banoo and Sajad Ahmad Ganie.
The case is of the year 2022, when Police Station Kokernag, acting on reliable intelligence, registered an FIR against the accused persons who were involved in the illegal trade of narcotics and were attempting to sell charas-like substance to youth. Acting swiftly, police apprehended the accused on the spot and seized 5 kilograms of charas-like substance from their possession.
Following a thorough investigation by SI Mohammad Rafiq of Police Station Kokernag, a detailed chargesheet was presented before the Hon’ble Court. During the trial, the Prosecution, represented by SrPO Arif Majeed Romshoo, produced 17 witnesses in support of the case.
After carefully scrutinizing the evidence and hearing both the prosecution and defense, the Hon’ble Court convicted all five accused on 07/05/2025. Upon hearing arguments on the quantum of punishment and considering both mitigating and aggravating circumstances, the Court sentenced the accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1,00,000/- each.

SRINAGAR: BJP National Executive Member & Chairperson of J&K Waqf Board, Dr Syed Darakhshan Andrabi today lambasted Pakistan and it's supporters for exporting terror and hatred in our country. She was participating in the Tiranga Yatra held by Bharatiya Janata Party in Srinagar.
Andrabi spoke to media persons and said that Terrorism cannot be tolerated anymore by a strong India under the leadership of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Operation Sindoor was very successful and celebrating the power shown by Indian army is the basis of this Tiranga Rally.
Every Indian is proud of the our armed forces, security forces and our Prime Minister. This is for unity and the pride of the country; this is a message for the entire world. We showed that we have the greatest army and we can fight anyone and gain victory", said Andrabi.
She said that Jammu Kashmir was the worst hit by Pak sponsored terror with the help of some local elements. "Pakistan always targeted our people and is the enemy of peace. It has been the official policy of Pakistan to derail our peace and prosperity initiatives.
They ployed to fragmentize our society and they and their supporters are responsible for the killing of thousands of innocents for decades here. Under Operation Sindoor the terror universities & camps were accurately targeted by our valorous forces", said Andrabi.
JAMMU: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India ShriGyanesh Kumar inaugurated a two-day capacity-building training programme for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), BLO Supervisors, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) from Haryana and NCT of Delhi at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), New Delhi today.
A total of 371 grassroots election officials (306 BLOs from Bihar; 30 EROs and BLO Supervisors from Haryana; 35 EROs and BLO Supervisors from NCT of Delhi) are taking part in the training programme. Including the current batch, over 2,600 field officials have been trained in the last two months by ECI in New Delhi.
In his inaugural address, CEC Gyanesh Kumar said that the BLOs will soon be issued standard Identity cards so as to facilitate their functioning during door-to-door verifications. He added that these participants will further train other BLOs in their respective States/UTs. The CEC impressed upon the participants that they are to function strictly as per the Representation of the People Act 1950, Registration of Electors Rules 1960, Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 and the instructions issued by the ECI from time to time.
The training is designed to enhance participants’ practical understanding especially in the areas of voter registration, Form handling, and field-level implementation of electoral procedures. The participants will be familiarised with the provisions of first and second appeals against the final electoral rolls as published with the DM/District Collector/Executive Magistrate under Section 24(a) of RP Act 1950 and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the State/UT under section 24(b) respectively.
It may be recalled that no less than 2,600 officials from Bihar, Haryana and NCT of Delhi after the announcement of General Elections 2024 have been trained by the ECI till 10th of January 2025.
The two-day training programme will include sessions on field level activities like simulating house-to-house surveys, case studies, and hands-on exercises for filling Forms 6, 7 and 8. Additionally, participants will receive practical training on the Voter Helpline App (VHA) and the IT tools. The officials will also be provided technical demonstrations and training of EVMs and VVPATs including mock polls.
SRINAGAR: Continuing its firm resolve against the menace of drugs, police achieved significant success by arresting seven drug peddlers in separate actions in Anantnag, Baramulla & Kulgam and recovered heroin-like/contraband substances from their possession.
In Anantnag, two drug peddlers identified as Mohammad Irfan son of Mohammad Jehangir Khan resident of Ghaziabad, UP and a lady drug peddler resident of Bawana JJ Colony, Delhi-39 were arrested in possession of 06 grams and 03 grams of heroin-like substances respectively.
Similarly, a notorious lady drug peddler resident of Bangidar, was also apprehended near Bangidar Bridge with 07 grams of heroin-like substance. Moreover, one more drug peddler identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Hajam son of Gul Mohammad Hajam resident of Saidwara, Dooru Shahabad was arrested after being found in possession of 06 grams of heroin-like substance.
In Baramulla, a police party led by SHO PS Kunzer at a checkpoint established at Hardbani Kunzer Bridge intercepted two persons identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Waza son of Mohd Ramzan Waza resident of Mamoosa Pattan and Abdul Qayoom Parra son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Parra resident of Reram Kunzer. During search, 26 grams of contraband and a cash amount of Rs. 4000/- were recovered from Mushtaq Ahmad and 20 grams of Charas-like substance were recovered from Abdul Qayoom. Subsequently, both the accused have been arrested and shifted to police station where they remain in custody.
In Kulgam, a police party headed by IC PP Mirbazar during patrolling intercepted a suspicious person. After checking, 302 grams of Charas powder like substance was recovered from his possession. He has been identified as Muneeb Ahmad Bhat son of Bashir Ahmad Bhat resident of Berigam Qazigund.
Accordingly, cases under relevant sections of law have been registered at respective police stations and further investigation have been taken up. Police remain committed to its zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking and urges the general public to come forward with any information related to drug abuse or peddling in their areas.
