GANDERBAL: Department of Religious Studies, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), Tuesday organized a special lecture “AI and Buddhism: A Perspective,” delivered by Prof. M.V. Ram Kumar Ratnam, an eminent scholar of Mahāyāna Buddhist Studies, former Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and former Director of the Centre for Distance Education, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Ram Kumar, delved into the Buddhist concept of impermanence, emphasizing the importance of being open to change and learning to embrace it. Sharing the vision behind the establishment of the Centre for Mahāyāna Buddhist Studies at Acharya Nagarjuna University and his role in its foundation, he elaborated on the centrality of suffering (dukkha) in Buddhism, stating that suffering is not only inevitable but also a motivating factor and foundational to understanding Buddhist philosophy. He highlighted how Buddhism uniquely approaches causality, offering a nuanced view of multiple causes and effects, in contrast to many other Indian philosophical traditions.
A part of the lecture was dedicated to Nāgārjuna’s contributions to epistemology and logic, where Prof. Ram Kumar explained how these tools help in making life more practical, meaningful, and contextually relevant. He stressed that wisdom (prajñā) is the fundamental mechanism for distinguishing right from wrong — a quality that is cultivated through knowledge acquisition, contemplation, and meditation.
Prof. Kumar explored the interface between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Buddhism, encouraging the audience to reflect on how Buddhist ethical principles and cognitive practices can inform the evolving discourse on AI and its impact on human life.
Earlier, Dr. Rigzen Gurmet, introduced Prof. Ram Kumar and highlighted his remarkable contributions to Buddhist studies. He then invited Dr. Moyeed-ul-Zafar, the Department's coordinator, to deliver the welcome address, setting the tone for the thought-provoking session. The event was attended by faculty members, research scholars, and students of the Department. Dr. Nazir Ahmad Zargar, academic Coordinator, proposed the vote of thanks.
SRINAGAR: Massive protests broke out across the Kashmir valley on Wednesday in response to the recent civilian killings in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The tragic incident has triggered a wave of public anger, leading to a complete shutdown of normal life throughout the valley. Markets remained closed, public and private transport stayed off the roads, and all major trade bodies joined the strike to express solidarity with the victims and condemn the ongoing violence.
In a strong and united response, protest demonstrations were held in Pahalgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, and several other districts of Kashmir. People came out in large numbers to denounce the senseless killings and demand justice for the innocent lives lost. The streets echoed with chants against terrorism and calls for peace.
Mosques across Kashmir used loudspeakers to condemn the killings and call upon people to stand against the brutality inflicted upon civilians. Emotional appeals were made from the mosques urging unity and patience, while also demanding action against those responsible. In Srinagar, BJP organized a momentous protest march at Jawahar Nagar. The march was led by J&K BJP President Sat Sharma, BJP General Secretary (Organization) Ashok Koul, and other senior leaders.
Locals from various parts of the valley also joined the march, turning it into a large and symbolic gathering of solidarity. Participants held placards reading “Stop Killing Innocents,” “Down with Terrorism” and “We Want Peace.” The entire Kashmir valley has risen in unity against the sponsored terrorism, declaring it as the true murder of Kashmir and the Kashmiriyat.
Security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas to maintain law and order, while political leaders, civil society members, and religious scholars continue to appeal for calm, restraint, and justice. Meanwhile, BJP also paid tributes to the 27 martyrs at the BJP Head Office, Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar.
Speaking on the occasion, Sat Sharma condemned the brutal terror attack and emphasized the BJP’s unwavering stand against terrorism. “The nation stands united in grief and in strength. The sacrifices of our martyrs will not go in vain,” he said, calling for national solidarity and support to the families of the victims.
Sunil Sharma (Leader of Opposition) called for a united stand against the terrorism and said that it harms the nation and society in multiple ways, adding that it also adversely affects every directly or indirectly affected individual socio-economically.
Ashok Koul highlighted the resilience of the people of Jammu & Kashmir in the face of continued threats and reiterated the party's commitment to ensuring peace, security, and justice in the region. Candles were lit, floral tributes were offered, and a two-minute silence was observed in memory of the martyrs. The event concluded with prayers for peace and a strong message against the forces of violence and disruption.
JAMMU: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu, celebrated International Mother Earth Day at the Brigadier Rajendra Singh Auditorium. The event was organized on the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” aimed at empowering individuals, especially the youth to take meaningful action toward a sustainable future. The program “Prakriti, Paryavaran aur Urja: Nai Chetna ke Saath” (“Nature, Environment and Energy: With a New Consciousness”), began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Prof. Richa Kothari, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, welcomed all the guests. In her address she laid emphasis on Department Vision and Mission.
Prof. Sunil Dhar, Dean, School of Life Sciences, in his introductory remarks, reflected on the celebration of Earth Day and talked on the effect of climate change on glacial cover of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The special address was delivered by Prof. Ramesh Arora, Director, IQAC, SGGWS University, Punjab, who spoke on “Protecting Planet Earth with Sustainable Practices,” underscoring the role of education and policy in achieving long-term environmental goals.
Prof. Dilip Kumar, Head, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), Northern Regional Campus, Jammu in his keynote address he streesed on “प्रकृतिएवंपर्यावरणकासामाजिकएवंसांस्कृतिकआधार” (The Social and Cultural Foundation of Nature and Environment), focused on the intersection of culture, communication, and ecology.
Sh. Umendra Dutt, Executive Director, Kheti Virasat Mission, Punjab, was the chief guest on the occasion. Sh. Dutt addressed the gathering on the importance of reviving indigenous ecological knowledge and sustainable agriculture. He urged students to embrace eco-friendly lifestyles and become agents of environmental transformation.
Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu in his Presidential address, lauded the Department's efforts and urged students to take the message of sustainability beyond the campus. Prof. Jain appreciated the contributions of research scholars and the dedication of the non-teaching staff in making the celebration a success. Prof. Yashwant Singh, Registrar CU Jammu, congratulated the department for organizing the event and commended their efforts in raising ecological consciousness.
The formal Vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Deepak Pathania, Department of Environmental Sciences, Central University of Jammu. A special highlight of the celebration was the “EcoGiri” event, organized by students of the department of EVS. Under this initiative, students displayed a variety of decorative items creatively made from converted waste materials, showcasing how waste can be transformed into aesthetic and useful objects. Adding vibrance to the occasion, a Slogan and Poster Competition was also organized, drawing enthusiastic participation from students across various Departments of University.
JAMMU: The government intends to facilitate the infrastructure development, research funding and industrial collaboration for the young inspiring engineers so that they can play a pivotal role in placing the country at the top position in the world economy. This was stated by Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, while addressing a gathering during the 10th National Conference and exhibition on Emerging Innovation and Trends in Engineering Technology (NCEEITET) organised by Government College of Engineering & Technology (GCET), Jammu. The conference is being organised in technical collaboration with IIT Kharagpur and association with World Consortium of Universities, supported by IIT Roorkee and MNRE (GoI).
The Dy CM appreciated the efforts of GCET Jammu in organising the National Conference which is aimed to provide a common platform to the academicians, researchers, students and industry professionals to interact and deliberate on latest trends and advancements in technology, research avenues and industry requirements. The event would raise the academic standards; build collaborative alliances and above all provide much needed exposure to the students of different engineering colleges across J&K.
Choudhary reiterated that the Industry professionals of J&K must open the channels for providing industrial trainings to the students to harness their skills and potentials. The Dy CM urged youth to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and called upon them to find alternatives to public sector jobs by setting up their own business ventures.
Lauding the role of CPSUs/PSUs in development of the country, he invited the industry professionals to tap their resources in development of J&K as a contribution towards the corporate social responsibility. He emphasised that conference would provide a common platform to exchange innovative ideas and knowledge between the academicians, students, researcher and industry to serve the society in a better way.
Two day programme of the conference was comprised of technical sessions, invited and plenary talks from eminent personalities, researchers and industry professionals. In addition, workshop and displays of exhibits by CPSUs/PSUs were the highlights of the events. Member Parliament, Jugal Kishore Sharma, ACS Education Shantmanu, Principal GCET, Dr. Sumeru Sharma along with other dignitaries, Professors, staff members and students were present during the conference.

Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, stated this while addressing a one day convention on "How To Raise Standard Of Education" organised by the Jammu Kashmir Teachers' Joint Action Committee (JKTJAC) here today.
Joint Director School Education, Shuba Mehta, Chairman JKTJAC, Saleem Sagar, President JKTJAC, Vinod Sharma, General Secretary, Najam Jafri besides teachers were present during the convention.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Chief Minister lauded the role of teachers in building the society. He hailed the efforts of JKTJAC in highlighting the demands and grievances of teacher fraternity. He asserted that standard of education can be raised through various strategies, including building educational partnerships, providing individualized learning, embracing technology and increasing global awareness.
The Dy CM stressed on exploring new strategies for teachers to adapt their instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners in the classroom. He suggested for revising curriculum to include global issues, cultural diversity and critical thinking skills to prepare the students for a globalized world.
Choudhary also advocated professional development for teachers through workshops, training programs and collaborations. He emphasized the importance of teacher mentorship and coaching to support new and experienced educators in their professional growth.
The Dy CM said that focus should be on improving teachers' training, reducing rote learning and creating more inclusive learning environment. He also emphasized the need for creating opportunities for students to connect classroom learning with practical, real-world applications through internships, mentorships and project-based learning.
Earlier, the President JKTJAC highlighted the genuine issues of the teaching fraternity while seeking speedy redress for the same. These included revival of ReT scheme, transfer policy for regularised ReT teachers, exemption of teachers from all sorts of non teaching assignments, revival of Old Pension Scheme, clearance of GP Fund bills and Gratuity of the employees and timely DPC of staff. The Dy CM assured the Association that the government would look into all their issues for redress in a phased manner.
