JAMMU: Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today inaugurated Eco-Vista at Raika Park Jammu, a state-of-the-art museum that showcases forest treasures of Jammu and Kashmir. Javed Rana, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that Eco-Vista is a significant step forward in restoring and preserving the natural heritage of our beautiful region. He said that it redefines sustainability from a reactive measure to a proactive, regenerative strategy.
EcoVista has been developed as a state-of-the-art museum dedicated to showcasing the rich, diverse and invaluable forest treasures of Jammu & Kashmir. It displays rich collection of forest products, geological rock samples, antlers, seeds, cross sections of wood, arts and crafts among other products. While praising the Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing for the concept, the Minister said that Eco-Vista is not just another museum, it is a living tribute to the unparalleled beauty and ecological significance of our forests.
“Through its innovative exhibits, photographs, samples, and models, this museum brings to life the extraordinary bounty of our forests,” he said. Rana said that Eco-Vista provides with the opportunity to connect with the forest not just through textbooks, but through direct, tactile experience. It will help foster a deep sense of appreciation and responsibility toward our natural environment, he said.
Javed Rana further said that Eco-Vista will play an essential role in building awareness and appreciation for the treasures of our forests. “This museum is an asset for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and a proud legacy for our future generations,” he added. He said that Eco-Vista has the potential to become a major tourist destination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and for visitors from across the country and beyond. Its unique exhibits, interactive displays and connection to the natural world will undoubtedly make it an important point of interest for the travellers and nature enthusiasts alike, he added.
Rana also stressed on the need to increase footfall and make the general public more conscious, nature-loving and mindful of their surroundings. He added that it is essential to create engaging, accessible and educational experiences that connect people with the environment. Elaborating on the environmental conservation, he said that in the current context of global warming, the importance of the environment has become more critical than ever. He called for more eco-friendly measures to preserve the precious gene pool of flora and fauna of the area.
“The future of our planet depends on the urgent action to restore and safeguard the environment against the accelerating effects of global warming,” he said. Javed Rana said that protection of environment means actively fighting climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy and preserving biodiversity.

He praised the efforts of the Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote sensing and said that this initiative will serve as a shining example of how we can blend education, conservation and tourism to benefit both our community and the world at large.
Commissioner Secretary, Forests, Ecology & Environment, Sheetal Nanda, said that Eco-Vista has given a sense of completion to the Raika Park. She said that nature interpretation centers like Eco-Vista helps to get more in touch with nature and we all should take responsibility in environmental protection and preservation.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Suresh Kumar Gupta, while speaking on the occasion said that we need to replicate Eco-Vistas to other locations. He further called upon the concerned to spread a concerted awareness campaign in schools, colleges so that students will learn about the treasures of our forest.
JAMMU: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary today paid a surprise visit to Government Ayurvedic Medical College and Nursing College at Akhnoor to inspect the progress of development works being executed there.
The concerned official apprised the Dy CM regarding approved works including boys hostel and girls hostel at Ayurvedic Medical College and a new block at Nursing College.
It was informed that Boys hostel has been sanctioned with an estimated cost of Rs 6.39 crore while girls hostel has been approved with an estimated cost of Rs 6.50 crore and an additional new block in Nursing College has to be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 2.64 crore. It wa also informed that all the works will be completed within 10 to 12 months duration.
During the visit, the Deputy Chief Minister inspected the quality of construction works and directed the executing agencies to expedite the pace of progress while maintaining high standards in work execution. He emphasised the significance of timely completion of development works besides maintaining the quality of material to enhance the public amenities.
The Deputy Chief Minister reiterated government's commitment towards accelerating developmental projects for welfare of the people. He asked the officials to address any bottlenecks and ensure the projects are completed within the stipulated timelines.
SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed profound grief over the tragic road accident near Handwara this morning, which claimed the lives of two students from Government Degree College (GDC) Sogam.
“The loss of two young, promising students in this unfortunate incident is a tragedy that weighs heavily on all of us. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families during this hour of immense grief. I also pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. We are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring all necessary assistance,” the Chief Minister’s Office said in a post on X.
Acting on the Chief Minister’s directions, Advisor to Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, along with Minister Javaid Ahmad Dar, visited Handwara Hospital to oversee the treatment of the injured students. The Advisor and Minister interacted with doctors and medical staff, directing the hospital administration to ensure quality care and close monitoring of the patients' recovery.
Earlier, Advisor Wani also visited SMHS Hospital Srinagar, where some of the injured students had been shifted for specialized treatment. He reviewed the medical arrangements, spoke with healthcare professionals, and emphasized the need for uninterrupted and effective medical attention. Later in the day, Minister Javaid Dar and Advisor Wani also visited the residences of the deceased students to personally offer condolences to the bereaved families.
The Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs1 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased students, Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured, and Rs 25,000 for students with minor injuries, as part of immediate government support. Earlier in the day, a bus carrying students from GDC Sogam, met with an accident near the Vadpora area of Kupwara district. Two college girls lost their lives in the mishap, while several others sustained injuries.
JAMMU: The Housing and Urban Development Department, Jammu and Kashmir, has successfully wrapped up an impactful week-long campaign under the “SVANidhi Se Samriddhi” and “Main Bhi Digital” initiatives. Held from April 7 to April 12, 2025, the campaign was conducted across 17 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), including Anantnag, Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara, Pulwama, Handwara, Shopian, Budgam, Bandipora, Udhampur, Kathua, Rajouri, R.S.Pura, Bari-Brahmana, Poonch, Doda and Ramban.
The drive aimed at uplifting street vendors by linking them with central government welfare schemes and enhancing their access to digital financial services. Around 100 awareness camps were organized during the campaign period, benefitting over 1200 eligible street vendors and their families. Under the “SVANidhi Se Samriddhi” initiative, vendors were connected with key social security and welfare schemes like PMJJBY, PMSBY, Ayushman Bharat, PM Matru Vandana Yojana, Janani Suraksha Yojana, and Jan Dhan Yojana. The focus was on promoting holistic development and ensuring the financial and social inclusion of vendors into mainstream welfare mechanisms.
Simultaneously, the “Main Bhi Digital” campaign empowered street vendors with digital payment tools and training, in collaboration with banking institutions and digital aggregators. The initiative helped onboard vendors to digital platforms, enabling them to conduct secure, transparent transactions and improve their business efficiency in today’s increasingly digital economy.
Speaking about the success of the campaign, Mandeep Kaur, Commissioner Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, said, “These initiatives mark a crucial step in building inclusive and resilient urban communities. By linking beneficiaries with welfare schemes and digital systems, we are not just supporting livelihoods but also preparing them for long-term financial sustainability.”
KUPWARA: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo today visited Kalaroos and Sogam areas of Kupwara district to express heartfelt condolences to the families of young students who tragically lost their lives in road accident today morning.
Advisor to Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani; former Minister, Choudhary Mohammad Ramzaan; Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan; Director Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Jahangir Bakshi; Director Colleges, J&K, Dr. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir and other senior officers of district administration also accompanied the Minister.
During the visit, Sakeena met the grieving family members of deceased students and expressed deep sorrow over the incident. She assured the families of every possible support from the government during this difficult time. “This is not just a personal loss for the families but a tragic moment for the entire area. The loss of such a promising young lives is deeply painful”, Sakeena stated.
The Minister also said that the Government has announced ex-gratia relief to the victims’ families, besides a magisterial inquiry has also been ordered to probe this fatal road accident.
She further added that as soon as the news of this tragic accident came, Director SKIMS, Principal GMC Srinagar, Principal GMC Handwara, Director Health Services Kashmir and CMO Kupwara were alerted by the government to ensure best possible treatment for the injured students. She highlighted that the administrators of all hospitals receiving the injured students were directed to personally monitor the injured students at their respective facilities to ensure their effective treatment.
The Minister, while expressing deep grief over the lives of those young students, said that due to prompt response of medical authorities to this tragic incident, several lives have been saved and injured students were swiftly shifted to required medical facilities for advanced treatment.
Later, the Minister also visited GMC Handwara and enquired about the well being of the students. During the visit, she met the injured students as well as their attendants and assured them all possible assistance and support from the government.
Interacting with the medical staff during the visit, she asked the Medical Superintendent and other staff to prioritize the medical care of the injured students and offer all necessary support to the victims and their families. She further directed the Medical Superintendent to personally monitor the treatment facilities of the injured students and keep sufficient staff available round the clock for their effective treatment.
On the occasion, Medical Superintendent informed the minister that most of the injured students have been discharged from the hospital after proper medical treatment and currently three students are undergoing treatment at GMC Handwara, one each at SMHS and SKIMS Srinagar.
