JAMMU: In a significant move to promote awareness about the benefits of One Nation, One Election in India, a programme was recently organized amongst advocates at Lawyers Chambers, J&K High Court, Jammu. The event aimed to educate and sensitize the legal fraternity about the advantages of synchronizing elections across the country.

Key Benefits Highlighted During the programme, experts emphasized the benefits of One Nation, One Election, including:

- Effective Governance: Reduces frequent election-related disruptions, allowing governments to focus on governance and policy-making.

- Cost Savings: Decreases election-related expenses for political parties, the Election Commission, and the government.

- Reduced Deployment of Security Forces: Minimizes the need for massive redeployment of security personnel, reducing costs and allowing them to focus on primary duties.

- Improved Policy Continuity: Enables governments to implement policies without interruptions, promoting stability and growth.

Challenges and Concerns

While acknowledging the benefits, the advocates also discussed potential challenges and concerns, such as:

- Feasibility Concerns: Aligning election cycles of Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, considering the varying terms of different state governments.

- Logistical Challenges: Managing the massive electoral exercise, including the availability of electronic voting machines, personnel, and security.

- Federalism Concerns: Potential contradictions with the principle of federalism, as One Nation, One Election may be seen as undermining regional autonomy.

Way Forward

The programme concluded with a call to action, emphasizing the need for:

- Consensus Building: Inclusive dialogues and consultations among political parties, states, and stakeholders to build consensus on the implementation of One Nation, One Election.

- Constitutional Amendments: Necessary amendments to the Constitution, the Representation of the People Act 1951, and the Rules of Procedure of Lok Sabha and State Assemblies to facilitate simultaneous elections.

- Infrastructure Readiness: Adequate investment in infrastructure, technology, and personnel to ensure smooth conduct of simultaneous elections.
