Even though India is a highly developing progressing country, the mentality of the men is such that it puts the nation as a whole in the backseat. With priority given to education and means of employment for men, the women are suffering. India is a country which will take another thousand years or more for the superior gender to recognize and give respect to women. The issues of women have time and again been highlight but to no avail.

The horrors of the December 2012 gang rape (Nirbhaya) will never let the country live in peace. It will always come back to haunt them. Presently, this is happening in the form of a documentary ‘India’s Daughter’ which is based on the 2012 gang rape. The documentary shows the pathetic and sick mindset of some of the Indian men. If this ever gets broadcasted at an international level, then India should be ready to tackle a downfall in its foreign tourism earnings.

One of the five men convicted of the 2012 rape, Mukesh Singh blames the victim. In the interview, he clearly states that the victim should not have been roaming at nine o’clock in the night. Unnerving even further, Singh says he has no regrets whatsoever. Point blank, this reflects the mentality of such men towards women. BBC highlights the abstract of the documentary interview as such… ’Why are they making a fuss about us, everybody is doing it. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy’.

This outrageous statement has added fuel to the fire of December 2012 which could not be smothered. It shows the satanic mentality of the rapist as well as the society which we live in. The Indian society gives more preference and priority to the male gender than the females. If the female crosses her boundaries then it’s said that ‘she asked for it’. We live amongst such societies even in a progressing India of the 22nd century. Sad, very sad; activists have made their throats hoarse and the government has done nothing but talk, nothing has been done about the safety for women. Nearly every week, the news media highlights a local woman or foreigner being raped.

The government should step in. Stauncher laws and acts to protect the rights of women should be set up. Priority should be given for women’s safety. Rapists should be punished harshly and set as examples so that in the near future, no men dare violate a woman’s modesty. Men need to control their lusts and desires. The government needs to crack down on the pornography industry as this is which adds fuel to the men’s lust.  Women are not objects. They are also nation builders like men. They have the same equal rights as men do. It’s time for men to stand up and recognize women for who they really are.
