BENGALURU: History was created by Bengaluru’s 9-year-old Svara Menon after she bagged 2nd place at the recently concluded 46th World Whistling Championship in Japan. As one of the three participants chosen from India in the ‘Child’ and recorded accompaniment category, Svara shared her tapes for the audition in December 2023. Svara is the first ever Indian child to participate and be on the podium in the 46 year old history of the competition.

Former two-time world champion Nikhil Rane, also known as the Smiling Whistler, coached Svara as she teed off against 125 competitors from across the globe. Officially titled “The 46th World Whistlers Convention”, the World Whistling Championship is a coveted event organized by the Japan Whistling Confederation (JWC).

At the World Championship, Svara captivated the audiences with her rendition of the classical masterpiece composed by Johannes Brahms titled Hungarian Dance No.5. Her second rendition under the ‘popular’ sub-category was 'Can’t help falling in love' by the legendary Elvis Presley. Svara’s win is a testament to her abilities and dedication, while also throwing the spotlight on the vast pool of talent available in India.

Speaking about the win, Shajesh Menon, Svara’s father and founder of Younion Brand Experiences, said, “Svara’s win at the World Championship is a moment of immense pride for us all. Not only does this win make the world sit up and take notice of the talent pool in India, but it also goes a long way in inspiring fellow Indians to follow their dreams passionately.” Shedding light on the role of Nikhil Rane, Svara’s coach, he added, “Nikhil is a former world champion himself and with so many years of experience, tailored his approach brilliantly to get the best out of Svara. They make a great team and we look forward to winning more laurels in the future.”

Sharing her joy on her daughter’s incredible feat, Svara’s mother Binitha Shajesh said, "We are beyond proud of our daughter for winning second prize at the World Whistling Convention. She has made history as the first Indian child to participate and win at this prestigious event. Watching her step onto the world stage was an incredibly moving experience. Her dedication and passion for whistling have been truly inspiring, and this recognition on a global stage is a testament to her hard work. Her achievement is not just a personal victory but a proud moment for all of India."
