- Shin Thant Shwe Eain, how has your family background and schooling experiences influenced your approach to leadership and community service, and can you share a specific example of how a personal challenge or setback shaped your journey?
Ans: My upbringing in a lower-middle-class family in Myanmar instilled in me a deep sense of resilience and empathy. Growing up, my path seemed destined for the ordinary—a typical education in a government school, aspiring for a decent job. However, the world took an unexpected turn with the onset of a global pandemic. Suddenly, everything halted, and I found myself lost in a sea of uncertainty and comfort zones.
It was during this period of introspection that I witnessed first hand the disparity and struggles faced by those in remote areas, far removed from the opportunities of urban life. Unable to pursue my own education, I was profoundly moved by the plight of individuals who lacked even the basic access to learning and fair livelihoods. The realization struck me hard—there were countless people enduring hardships far beyond my own.
In that moment of clarity, I made a decision. I couldn't stand idly by while others suffered. With just a handful of students, I embarked on a journey to provide free English classes, hoping to make a small difference in their lives. Little did I know, this small initiative would blossom into something much greater.
Through perseverance and a relentless drive to serve my community, I founded initiatives like NextGen Impact and Grow Edu Flowers, empowering young minds and fostering positive change. Every setback I encountered along the way only fuelled my determination to push forward, knowing that each obstacle was an opportunity to grow and make a difference.
My journey is a testament to the transformative power of service and the resilience of the human spirit. It's not just about overcoming personal challenges; it's about using those experiences to uplift others and create a brighter future for all. My upbringing and schooling experiences have shaped me into the leader I am today—a leader driven by compassion, fuelled by perseverance, and dedicated to making a meaningful impact on society.

- As the President and Founder of GEF - GrowEdu Flowers, could you elaborate on a specific project or initiative that you found particularly challenging and rewarding? How did you navigate through the challenges and what were the key lessons learned?
Ans: As the President and Founder of GEF - GrowEdu Flowers, one of the most impactful yet challenging endeavours I undertook was establishing a public library in a remote village. Ans: In my advocacy for gender equality and women's empowerment, I've led impactful initiatives aimed at challenging societal norms and empowering women to break free from traditional roles. One notable campaign involved redefining the narrative surrounding gender roles in Myanmar. From organizing webinars and educational sessions on sex education to delivering empowering speeches at prominent forums like the Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association.
Through speeches delivered at prominent forums like the MWEA, I've emphasized the importance of viewing women not as mere supporters but as equals standing proudly beside their male counterparts. This message has resonated deeply, sparking conversations and inspiring women to reclaim their rightful place at the forefront of society.
Every success story is a testament to the power of our collective efforts, reinforcing the belief that real change is possible when we stand together and refuse to accept the status quo. We faced setbacks and disappointments as we searched for individuals who believed in our cause as deeply as we did. It tested our resolve at every turn.
Driven by a fierce determination, I reached out to fellow dreamers who shared my passion. Together, we embarked on a journey filled with challenges. This journey taught us the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to our mission, even in the face of adversity. Continual improvement is at the core of our approach, guided by feedback and a dedication to innovation. - In your role as Head of HR at AYAN Myanmar, you played a crucial role in talent development and member well-being. How do you foster a culture of inclusivity and support within the organization, especially considering the diverse backgrounds and experiences of its members?
Ans: When I first stepped into AYAN Myanmar at the age of 16, I was the youngest member, just beginning my journey in the organization as a normal HR officer. Over time, through dedication and hard work, I rose to the position of Head of HR, entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing all HR functions within the organization.
In our organization, members come from various corporate backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills to the table. It was challenging to ensure that everyone felt included and supported amidst such diversity. However, I found that the key to fostering inclusivity lay in identifying our common goal and co-creating our organizational values and objectives together.
Moreover, I prioritized creating a supportive environment where every member felt valued and respected. This meant actively listening to their concerns, providing opportunities for professional development, and fostering a culture of mentorship and mutual support. Ultimately, my journey as Head of HR at AYAN Myanmar taught me that inclusivity isn't just about embracing diversity; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment for every member.
- Balancing volunteerism, advocacy, and personal development can be demanding. How do you ensure self-care and maintain motivation and resilience amidst challenging circumstances and busy schedules?
Ans: For me, maintaining motivation amidst demanding schedules is about persevering in my work and never giving up on my passion and dreams. I thrive on staying busy, as it fuels my sense of purpose and keeps me connected to what I love. When faced with challenging circumstances, my resilience stems from knowing that there are many people relying on me, which drives me to overcome obstacles and push forward.
However, amidst the hustle and bustle, I understand the importance of self-care. Taking care of myself is not just about physical well-being but also nurturing my mental and emotional health. Whether it's carving out time for relaxation, pursuing hobbies, or seeking support from loved ones, I prioritize self-care as a means to sustain my energy and enthusiasm for my work.
By balancing volunteerism, advocacy, and personal development while prioritizing self-care, I'm able to maintain a sense of balance and resilience, ensuring that I can continue making meaningful contributions to my community and beyond.

Their success stories reaffirm my belief in the transformative power of education. I'm committed to empowering every individual to reach their fullest potential, no matter their circumstances.
- With your involvement in discussions on ASEAN's youth priorities in economic development, could you identify a key area where you believe youth can make the most significant impact in driving sustainable economic growth within the region?
Ans: From my perspective, one area where youth can truly drive sustainable economic growth within the ASEAN region is through innovation and entrepreneurship. We've seen time and again how young people, with their fresh perspectives and boundless creativity, can shake up industries, create new markets, and spark job opportunities.
In my view, fostering an environment that supports and encourages young entrepreneurs is key. We need mentorship programs, access to funding, and regulatory frameworks that empower rather than hinder innovation.
Youth-led startups and innovative ventures have the power to revolutionize traditional industries, create new markets, and spur job opportunities. By fostering a supportive ecosystem for young entrepreneurs, ASEAN can tap into the creativity and ingenuity of its youth to address pressing societal and environmental challenges while driving economic development.
I firmly believe that investing in the entrepreneurial spirit of ASEAN's youth isn't just about securing their future—it's about securing the future of our entire region. It's about creating a legacy of innovation, sustainability, and prosperity that will benefit generations to come.
- As the President of NGI, you've led initiatives focused on advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Can you provide an example of a project that effectively addressed a pressing societal or environmental issue, and how you mobilized your team to achieve meaningful results?
Ans: One notable project that stands out is our endeavour to address the disconnect between parents and their children, a prevalent societal issue. We launched a series of knowledge-sharing comic episodes aimed at bridging this gap and fostering understanding and communication within families. Additionally, we organized a ground breaking youth-led webinar titled 'Han,' focusing on personal grooming—a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of personal development.
In mobilizing my team for these initiatives, I always encouraged them to envision the positive impacts their actions could have on their future. By instilling a sense of purpose and significance in our endeavours, we were able to galvanize our collective efforts and achieve meaningful results that resonated deeply within our community.
- Given your experience in organizational development and HR management, what do you believe are the most critical factors for building and sustaining a high-performing team, particularly in the context of youth-led initiatives?
Ans: At NextGen Impact, we believe in cultivating a dynamic team environment that fuels our youth-led initiatives. It's about fostering purpose, unity, and growth among our members. We prioritize open communication, inclusivity, and strong leadership to ensure everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique talents. By embracing these principles, we don't just build a team; we forge a community dedicated to driving meaningful change and leaving a positive impact on society.
- Looking ahead, what are your aspirations and goals for furthering your impact in community service, advocacy, and youth empowerment, both in Myanmar and on a broader regional or global scale?
Ans: In my journey of community service and youth empowerment, my ultimate goal is to cultivate leaders who will continue to drive positive change long after my time. I firmly believe in the power of "power with" empowerment, where we empower individuals to lead and create impact in their own communities. Advocacy plays a crucial role in this endeavour, and I am dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action on important issues.
Looking ahead, I aspire to expand NextGen Impact by establishing more country chapters, amplifying our reach, and empowering youth worldwide. Through these efforts, I aim to foster a culture of leadership, advocacy, and positive change that transcends generations and borders.
