NEW DELHI: President of India, Ram Nath Kovind today presented “Nari Shakti Puraskar” to Nilza Wangmo an entrepreneur sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) at Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Nilza, who is from Alchi, a remote village in the Union Territory of Ladakh, famous for Alchi Buddhist started her restaurant-Alchi Kitchen in 2016. Alchi Kitchen is a popular eatery in the mountainous region, which serves Ladakh’s traditional cuisine, along with a modern twist.
The restaurant is nestled in the mountains of Ladakh and is thronged by hundreds of tourists and local people daily. Nilza says that her mother has been her inspiration and has supported her all through her life.
Nilza's Alchi Kitchen, sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute, is one of many ventures in the Union Territory of Ladakh sponsored under Youth Startup Loan Scheme (YSLS) by Jammu and Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute.
The Nari Shakti Puraskar is conferred on individual women, public and private institutions and public departments for their activism or their contributions to the cause of women's empowerment. The award, instituted in the year 1999 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India, is given in six institutional categories and two individual categories.
