KUPWARA: An awareness programme on Solid Waste Management (SWM) was today organized by District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in collaboration with Municipal Council Kupwara, at Town Hall Kupwara. The programme was held under the supervision of Chairperson, DLSA (Pr. District & Session Judge) Kupwara, Shazia Tabsum and under the guidance of Secretary DLSA/Sub-Judge, Kupwara, Manzoor Ahmad Khan.
The aim of the programme was to generate awareness about the protection and improvement of the environment, promoting sustainable development and for matters connected therewith.
Resource person, Tawseef Raja, (Assistant LADC) while addressing the gathering spoke on the importance of solid waste management and the associated health threats/ risk posed by it. Various components of solid waste management i.e., Generation, Storage, Collection, Transportation, Disposal, and various aspects of waste management which is Reduce, Reuse & Recycle (RRR) was also highlighted by him.
During the course of the programme, he also threw light on various Environmental Laws and Legislations including, The Air (Prevention and Regulate of Pollution) Act, 1981, The Environment Protection Law, 1986, The National Green Tribunal Act, 2010 etc and further stated that the laws need to be followed to maintain a balance in the environment and take India to prosperity.
The resource person also highlighted the success of Jalige Gram Panchayat SWM Unit and stressed upon Self Help Groups (SHGs) to cooperate with ground level workers of Municipal Council Kupwara. Para legal Volunteers, Irfan Ahmad Shah and Malik Ifshana also spoke on the occasion and assisted in the smooth functioning of the programme. The programme was attended by Officials of Municipal Council, Kupwara, officials of DLSA Kupwara, local populace of the town and Para Legal Volunteers.
