JAMMU: In a recent medical breakthrough, doctors at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals successfully performed a complex cardiac surgery on a 54-year-old male patient with a rare condition. The patient was diagnosed with an ascending aorta aneurysm and dilated arch, along with proximal descending thoracic aorta dilation. The surgery, known as "replacement of ascending aorta and arch with frozen elephant trunk," was carried out utilizing a specialized hybrid device under the expert care of Dr. Mukesh Goel, Senior Consultant,Cardiothoracic Surgeon , Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery and Dr. Niranjan Hiremath , Senior Consultant , Cardiovascular and Aortic Surgery , Surgical Lead ,Apollo Aortic Program.
The patient had a history of long-standing hypertension .His aneurysm not only affected the ascending aorta but also extended into the arch, requiring a meticulous and intricate surgical approach. The surgery involved the replacement of the ascending aorta and arch with a specialized hybrid graft, addressing the aneurysmal dilation and restoring normal cardiovascular function. The use of a frozen elephant trunk, a technique involving deep hypothermia of 20°C and total circulatory arrest, further underlines the advanced nature of the procedure.
During the surgery, the medical team encountered no complications. The patient's condition remained stable postoperatively, and he recovered well without any adverse events. This successful outcome highlights the expertise and capabilities of the cardiothoracic and vascular surgery department at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.
