CHANDIGARH: Jammu & Kashmir Cabinet Minister, Javed Ahmed Rana today participated in the Regional Power Ministers' Conference, 2025, of Northern States/UTs held here in Chandigarh. The conference provided a platform for deliberation on critical power sector issues affecting the region including resource adequacy, transmission capacity and cyber security.
During the conference, Javed Rana sought firm and assured power supply to Jammu and Kashmir from the Government of India during winters at reasonable prices. He highlighted the challenges facing the state due to its geographical location and the seasonal variation in power demand. He also stressed the importance of strengthening the transmission infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir.
Javed Rana urged for upgradation of Kishenpur-Moga transmission line and completion of the 400 KVA Grid Station at Siot to ensure reliable power supply to the region. Furthermore, Rana emphasized the need for promoting sustainable energy in Jammu and Kashmir. He highlighted the potential for small hydro projects in the UT and the importance of green corridor connectivity with Ladakh for solar energy evacuation.
The Minister underlined the imperative of ensuring cyber security in the power sector, recognizing the critical importance of protecting the UT’s power infrastructure from potential threats. Javed Rana assured that the Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, is committed towards collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a reliable, sustainable and secure power supply to the people of the region.
The conference provided a valuable opportunity for the JK Minister to engage with his counterparts from other northern states and UTs, as well as officials from the Ministry of Power, to discuss crucial issues and explore solutions to the challenges facing the power sector in J&K.
SRINAGAR: In a profound celebration of environmental responsibility, School Education Department (SED), Jammu and Kashmir, observed World Environment Day 2025 with resounding enthusiasm and heartfelt commitment across all districts of the Union Territory. The theme for this year, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” became a rallying call for students, teachers and communities to rise in defense of the Earth.
The main event was held at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Ganderbal, where Director School Education Kashmir (DSEK), Dr. G.N. Itoo led the proceedings as chief guest. He was joined by Additional Secretary, SED, G.N. Bhat, who attended as guest of honour. In his inspiring address, Dr. Itoo emphasized that the real change begins at home. “When families, schools, and communities commit to giving up plastic, only then we can truly protect our planet for future generations.”
Dr. Itoo announced that all the schools would be declared plastic-free zones. He also called for rejuvenation of eco-clubs, expanding their work beyond school boundaries to encompass nearby water bodies and tourist areas, making environmental care an integral part of student's daily experience. The event was also attended by Chief Education Officer Ganderbal, Oneel Kumar Bhat, Deputy CEO Ganderbal, Rumysa Sangeen and several other officials from the Education Department.
Beyond these flagship events, World Environment Day 2025 was celebrated across all schools in the entire Kashmir division through a diverse array of activities. These included solemn pledges, engaging quizzes, extensive tree plantation drives, crucial cleanliness campaigns, informative awareness rallies, insightful seminars and talks, stimulating debates, invigorating nature walks and marathons, and creative painting and slogan writing competitions, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the environment among the student community.
In total, 7955 schools celebrated the day with a total participation of 439072 students, teachers/ HoI's and community members. The widespread participation and diverse initiatives underscore the School Education department's commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens and promoting sustainable practices across Jammu and Kashmir.
KATRA: The Lieutenant Governor, Shri Manoj Sinha today undertook a ride in Self-Propelled Inspection Car (SPIC) on Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail track from Katra to Nowgam Station, Srinagar. The Rail Link was dedicated to the nation by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today.
The Lieutenant Governor inspected all tunnels and bridges on the route and reviewed security and safety measures in place. He also interacted with pilots and railways officials and expressed his happiness and pride on Kashmir's all weather railway connectivity with the rest of India. During his journey, the Lieutenant Governor was accompanied by the Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.
KATRA: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha inspected arrangements in Katra on Thursday ahead of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's scheduled Public Meeting on 06th June.
The Lieutenant Governor reviewed the preparations to ensure the smooth conduct of the event and directed the officials for strict security, safety measures and seamless coordination among all departments. Hon'ble Prime Minister will dedicate the iconic Chenab Bridge, the tallest railway bridge in the world, Country's first cable-stayed Anji rail bridge and Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project to the nation.
“Dedication of Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link to the nation by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is a historic leap for Jammu Kashmir Union Territory.
J&K UT is stronger, prosperous than ever and witnessed unprecedented growth under the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Inauguration and foundation stone laying of key infrastructure projects are examples of his commitment to J&K to ensure speedy and inclusive development,” the Lieutenant Governor said.
The Lieutenant Governor observed that the much-awaited inauguration of Chenab and Anji Rail Bridge and flag-off of the Vande Bharat Trains by Hon'ble Prime Minister will mark a historic moment for the nation and it will shape the future of J&K UT and future of its citizens.
BARAMULLA: In recognition of the ‘World Environment Day 2025,’ Municipal Council Baramulla today organized impactful activities centered on environmental protection and plastic waste reduction.
The main event was held at the DC Office premises, where Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, alongwith Assistant Commissioner Revenue, Chief Executive Officer Municipal Council Baramulla and District Information Officer, led a symbolic plantation drive under the theme ‘Ek Paid Maa Ke Naam.’
The global theme for this year, ‘Combating Plastic Pollution,’ inspired the district’s awareness campaign, focusing on encouraging eco-friendly alternatives and responsible waste management practices.
DC emphasized that environmental protection is a shared responsibility of government bodies, institutions, and citizens alike. Initiatives such as the plantation drive and the anti-plastic campaign highlight how small, consistent actions can significantly benefit the environment. Raising awareness and adopting sustainable habits are essential to effectively combat challenges like plastic pollution.
Key initiatives promoted during the event included ‘Plastic Out – Fabric In,’ plastic collection drives at RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Centres, and awareness efforts as part of the Swachh Bharat Harit Bharat – Green Campaign. These efforts align with the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 framework, supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, and are integrated with the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) movement.
DC further noted that adopting eco-friendly alternatives and responsible waste management practices are vital steps towards building a cleaner, greener Baramulla. The strong commitment shown by the Municipal Council and its staff serves as an example for the community to follow in creating a healthier future.
The program saw active participation from staff and officers, who committed to reducing plastic use and incorporating sustainable practices in their daily routines. Meanwhile, in a vibrant celebration of World Environment Day, the Youth Services and Sports (YSS) Baramulla conducted a series of eco-conscious events across various zones.
The day witnessed a dynamic array of activities including Clean-Up Drives, Walkathons, Mini Marathons, and a Cyclothon, all aimed at spreading environmental awareness and promoting sustainable living among youth. Notably, Zone Chandanwari took the lead with a Cyclothon, drawing participation from hundreds of enthusiastic students.
In Zone Uri, a Mini Marathon flagged-off from Mini Stadium Uri concluded at GHSS Uri, with over 500 students showcasing their commitment to a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
Adding to the momentum, Zone Pattan and Zone Singpora Kalan organized impactful Clean-Up Drives, engaging a large number of student volunteers in environment-friendly action. Meanwhile, Zones Dangerpora and Boniyar carried out Walkathons, reflecting the collective spirit and responsibility of youth towards protecting nature.
These district-wide events not only marked World Environment Day with enthusiasm but also instilled a strong message of environmental stewardship among students and communities alike.
