JAMMU: Commissioner State Taxes Department (STD), P.K Bhat alongwith Special Secretary, Finance department, K.K Sidha today jointly chaired a meeting at Excise and Taxation Complex here to review the financial position in first quarter of fiscal year 2024-25 ending this June.
Additional Commissioner Administration & Enforcement, Jammu, Namrita Dogra; Deputy Commissioners of STD, Assistant Commissioners of STD and all the State Tax Officers (STO’s) of Jammu division were presented in the meeting.
During the meeting, the Tax officers of Jammu and Kashmir have been instructed to take strict action against cases of tax evasion, tax leakage and tax pilferage in the Union Territory for revenue augmentation besides ensuring 100% compliance in return filing by registered taxpayers.
Addressing the meeting, Commissioner STD expressed his concerns over dip in revenue collection in first quarter and directed tax officers to gear-up for remaining three quarters, where at-least 20% hike is expected from each circle to meet the revenue targets of FY 2024-25.
The Commissioner instructed officers for usage of analytical portal provided to officers to detect cases of tax evasion. He stressed on the enhanced usability of the GST portal by all the concerned officers as there are many indicators which could help in early detection of any fraudulent activity.
Special Secretary, Finance K.K. Sidha, advised the officers to get familiar with type of dealers pertaining to their circles thoroughly as it is most important to know the basic fabric of revenue stream. He also stressed the officers to increase the field activity and make taxpayers aware of consequences of non-compliance and tax evasions with a view to create deterrence amongst the taxpayers.
The Special Secretary stressed on proactive information sharing amongst various wings of the department to detect tax evasion and revenue leakage cases. He directed the officers to ensure compliance in sectors like banquet halls, catering business, tuition centers, car accessory and modification shops where business is primarily done on a cash receipt and not on proper GST invoice.
He asked the enforcement wings to intensify their field actions and take appropriate measure to curb undervaluation with special focus outer and remote areas. He impressed the officers of enforcements wings to make workable rosters for area and trade specific enforcements.
During the meeting, Namrita Dogra gave a presentation showing circle wise performance of each tax circle. The performance of Deputy Commissioners of Enforcement Wings and Stamps were also discussed in the detail.
During the meeting focus was also laid on revenue augmentation, proper scrutiny and tracking of E-way bills, optimal use of technology for assessment of red flags, aggressively following the cases where huge chunk of tax amount got choked, tax evasion and Input Tax Credit mismatch cases.
SRINAGAR: Justice Tashi Rabstan, Chief Justice (Acting), High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, today visited the District Court Complex, Mominabad, Srinagar, to review the ongoing developmental projects and address the issues faced by judicial officers, bar members, litigants and other stakeholders.
Jawad Ahmed, Principal District & Sessions Judge, Srinagar, along with other judicial officers of Srinagar district were present on the occasion.
Justice Tashi Rabstan engaged in an interactive session with the judicial officers, where he expressed his keen interest in the overall efficacy of the justice delivery system. He compassionately listened to the concerns and issues raised by the judicial officers and assured prompt redressal, reflecting his dedication in improving the judicial processes and infrastructure.
During the visit, Jawad Ahmed gave a detailed presentation on the ongoing developmental projects within the District Court Complex. These works included Phase-II construction of District Court Complex, which aims to enhance the capacity and facilities of the judicial infrastructure and installation of CCTV cameras within courtrooms.
He also highlighted the urgent need of upgraded security arrangements within the court complex. He emphasised the efforts to ensure a safe and secure environment for all stakeholders.
The visit of Justice Tashi Rabstan underscored his commitment towards fostering a robust and efficient judicial system.
JAMMU: Deputy Commissioner, Sachin Kumar Vaishya, inaugurated a job fair under the SANKALP Scheme at the District Employment & Counselling Centre Jammu. Assistant Director Employment, Mukhlis Ali was also present at the occasion.
The event took place at the Employment Complex Toph Sherkhania marking a significant step towards empowering the youth and job seekers of the district by providing ample employment opportunities and career guidance. Over 13 companies from different sectors actively participated in the Rozgar Mela, offering more than 200 vacancies.
A total of 400 job seekers attended the event, with 65 individuals shortlisted and 10 selected on the spot. The Job Fair/Rozgar Mela demonstrated a strong commitment to enhancing employment prospects and supporting the career aspirations of the district's youth.
JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu continued its comprehensive five-day Orientation Program for the incoming batches at its state-of-the art campus in Jagti. The program welcomed the 5th Batch of Ph.D. (2024-28), the 3rd Batch of Ph.D. (WP) (2024-28), the 9th Batch of MBA (2024-26), the 3rd Batch of MBA (HA&HM) (2024-26), and the 4th Batch of EMBA (2024-26).
The third day commenced with an invigorating yoga session led by Yoga Guru Shri Sahil Mehra coordinated by Team Anandam, IIM Jammu. The session, titled “Maximize Happiness and Mindfulness,” set a positive and reflective tone for the day’s activities, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and mindfulness for the students.
Following the yoga session, Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chairperson, Student Affairs, IIM Jammu provided a detailed overview of the “Students’ Policy, Rules and Regulations at IIM Jammu.” This session was crucial in acquainting the students with the institutional guidelines, ensuring a smooth and disciplined academic journey ahead. The morning continued with a series of outbound activities designed to foster team building and collaboration among the students, enhancing their interpersonal skills and camaraderie.
The afternoon also included an insightful series of sessions with industry speakers. Mr. Shashi Kumar K, Talent Acquisition and Early Careers (University Campus) India Lead at Publicis Sapient, delivered a session focusing on industry expectations and career pathways. He advised students to be open-minded and ready to accept themselves and new experiences. He stressed the importance of not being centred around one's own thoughts and being willing to embrace exposure and growth. Ms. Sheetal Sharma, Associate Director People and Culture, Grant Thornton, discussed “The Future of Work: Integration of AI in HR to Build a Culture of Happiness and Empowerment.” She underscored the significance of ethics and integrity in the workplace. She pointed out that organizations need individuals who uphold these values to build a trustworthy and reliable work environment. These sessions provided the students with a forward-looking perspective on career development and the evolving role of technology in the workplace.
Another set of industry speaker sessions featured Mr. Satish Mohapatra, EVP Talent Acquisition, Maruti Suzuki, who shared his life journey and insights on the future of HR. He discussed the dual impact of AI on the job market, creating both chaos and new opportunities. He emphasized that in a technologically driven world, it is the people who make the difference, highlighting the value of human skills and capabilities. Mr. Koustubh Kanade, Senior Leadership at British Biologicals, who was also present at the event, explored “Strategic Thinking in Healthcare: Examples in Industry and Government.” He encouraged students to think creatively and take risks to achieve success in the corporate world. He shared insights on the importance of innovative thinking and the willingness to step outside one's comfort zone. These sessions offered practical and strategic insights into diverse fields.
A significant session on placements featured Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics and Chairperson Placements, IIM Jammu, Dr. Baljeet Singh, Co-Chairperson, Placement, IIM Jammu, and Dr. Atanu Dutta, Placement Officer, IIM Jammu. Prof. Jabir Ali emphasized the student-driven nature of the placement process, with the Placement Office providing all needed support. He gave an overview of the placement scenario and informed the new students about the various student placement committees, including the Industry Interaction Committee (IIC), Disha Committee, and Placement Committee. He urged the students to actively participate and contribute to strengthening the
placement activities at IIM Jammu. Dr. Baljeet Singh, Co-Chairperson, Placements, IIM Jammu provided further insights into the placement activities, detailing the roles of the three pivotal committees: the Industry Interaction Committee, the Placement Committee, and the Disha Committee. He highlighted how these committees are instrumental in driving successful placements, fostering industry connections, and ensuring a robust placement process for the students at the Institute.
Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, IIM Jammu, highlighted the importance of creating real-time learning experiences in every class during his session on "Teaching through Case Study." He explained that a case study is a powerful pedagogical tool that presents real-life business solutions and scenarios, challenging students to engage deeply with the case studies. The session emphasized the need for students to prepare themselves to tackle these scenarios, engage in discussions, and generate knowledge through deliberations. He noted that if students do not speak up in class, the value of the case study is lost. He stressed that every day should bring a 'wow' factor in their learning. Setting clear learning objectives is crucial, as real learning emerges from the conflicts and discussions in class. Through case study analysis, he mentioned that students should connect with the protagonist, identify and analyse issues, and develop and evaluate recommendations. He advised students to always note down key points and highlights to make the most of these discussions and reminded them that learning happens when they have the zeal to learn.
The afternoon concluded with two engaging sessions: Shri Mohit Gupta, Co-Founder of Friends of Books (FROB), emphasized the role of curiosity in the learning process. He pointed out that without curiosity, one cannot learn effectively, even with access to all the necessary resources and facilities. He discussed the challenges and successes encountered along the way, offering insights into building a successful venture in the realm of books and entrepreneurship. Inspector Gagandeep Singh, Cyber Cell, Jammu, provided valuable insights into cybersecurity and its increasing significance in today's scenario. He discussed emerging threats, best practices for digital safety, and the role of proactive measures in safeguarding personal and organizational data. His session underscored the critical need for awareness and preparedness in the face of evolving cyber threats, offering practical advice to students on navigating the digital landscape securely.
Dr. Sarbjit Singh, Chairperson, International Relations, IIM Jammu conducted an enlightening session on the “International Student’s Exchange Program and Working in a Cross-Cultural Environment.” He provided students with valuable insights into global opportunities and the importance of cultural adaptability in today’s interconnected world. Dr. Somu Gorai, Co-chairperson, International Relations, IIM Jammu, added that the International Student’s Exchange Program is a transformative experience that broadens perspectives and enhances cultural understanding. He emphasized that it prepares students to thrive in diverse environments and equips them with the skills necessary to succeed in a globalized market.
The day wrapped up with a vibrant cultural program by ‘Natrang’ led by Padmashri Balwant Thakur. The cultural performances celebrated the rich heritage of the region and fostered a sense of community among the students.

JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu hosted 50 students from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Reasi, Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Reasi and Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Reasi as part of the Vigyan Jyoti Programme. This initiative aims to promote gender parity in STEM fields by increasing the representation of girls in science and technology.
The outreach section, led by Prof. Abhay Sharma, Dean, and Dr. Nalin Kumar Sharma, Associate Dean, organized the visit to the institute’s various facilities, including the Tinkerer’s Lab, Central Workshop, and Physics Lab, where dedicated staff explained the operation and significance of equipment. The day included informative sessions where Dr. Pervaiz Fathima Khatoon, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Dr. Nalin Kumar Sharma motivated the students towards STEM.
