JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu today on 20th December, 2024 organized Gender Sensitization workshop for the P.G Students and scholars of the Department of History, University of Jammu. Prof. Suman Jamwal, Head, Department of History, welcomed all the participants and emphasized on the importance of such workshopand applauded the efforts of the Centre. While highlighting the importance of the workshop she mentioned that the gender disparity in the society exist due to the established ideologies that has been created over the period of time, which needs to be changed by conducting such types of workshops.
Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies was the resource person.In her lecture she explained the various gender issues as well as elaborated,that how patriarchy is used as a mechanismto subordinate the women’s status in the society and contributes to number of problems affecting women, such as harassment, domestic violence, dowry deaths, acid attacks etc. While interacting, she also quoted few land mark cases to explain the women’s status in the society and also suggested various ways to avail the legal safeguards available to women.She also shared her personal experiences and said that mere legal provisions are not enough rather there should be a change in the mindset of every individual.
Prof. Sham Narayan, faculty, Department the History, also traced the history of women’s subjugation and explained how the norms have been set over the period where women were confined to the four walls and the commodification of women started very earlier where the notion of male supremacy was set and women were given the religious justification of their subordinate position in the society. He also stressed to deconstruct the patriarchal ideology that has been implemented and practiced over the period to bring change in the society.
Large number of students, scholars and faculty members from the Department of History very enthusiastically participated in the workshop and asked questions which were answered to their satisfaction.Ms. Kunzang Angmo conducted the program and Dr. Saranjit Kaur presented the formal vote of thanks, both faculty members from Centre for Women’s Studies.
