SHOPIAN: The Principal District and Sessions Judge (PD&SJ) Shopian, Mehmood Ahmad Chowdhary; District Magistrate (DM) Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar and SSP Shopian, Anayat Ali today visited Pulwama and conducted an inspection of the Special Jail Pulwama. District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Shopian on the occasion launched a significant campaign to identify and assist elderly (over 70 years) and terminally ill prisoners at District Jail.
The initiative, undertaken under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority, aims to ensure the well-being and legal rights of vulnerable inmates. Principal Magistrate, Juvenile Justice Board, Shopian, Bazila Bashir, Secretary, DALSA, Mudasir Farooq, Superintendent, Special Jail Correctional Home, Pulwama, Shabir Ahmed Mir were also present on the occasion.
The officers assessed the living conditions and facilities provided to inmates at the home. The officers interacted with inmates, inquiring about their health, provision of food and their access to legal representation. Key facilities such as the Video Conference Hall, Health centre, Legal Aid Clinic, Cooking Area, and washrooms were also inspected.
Superintendent, Special Jail Correctional Home Pulwama was asked to ensure better facilities for the inmates. Importance of recording and addressing inmates grievances, particularly for those with pending trials outside the district was also emphasized on the jail authorities. DM commended the prison administration's efforts in providing vocational and educational training to inmates, highlighting the significance for their reintegration into society. He also praised the staff for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and overall inmate welfare.
