BHADERWAH: In a significant initiative aimed at enhancing awareness and understanding of the revamped criminal justice framework, the Jammu and Kashmir Police organized an awareness program at the Community Hall in Bhaderwah. The event focused on the introduction of three new laws: Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replace the longstanding Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and Indian Evidence Act.

The program, graced by Additional Supdtt of Police Vinod Sharma as the chief guest, saw active participation from SDPO Bhaderwah Dr. Waseem, Station House Officer Sandeep Parihar, Advocate Mohd Majid Malik, and PSI Rahul, who served as resource persons. Educationist Arif Rana Bhaderwah acted as the stage secretary for the event.

Advocate Mohd Majid Malik, Panel Lawyer at the District Legal Services Authority, highlighted the transformative aspects of the new laws. He emphasized their provisions allowing anyone to file a Zero FIR at any police station, irrespective of jurisdiction, and enabling online registration of police complaints and electronic serving of summons. Malik described the day as historic for the Indian criminal justice system, attributing the reforms to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Hon’ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah.

Under the newly enacted laws, mandatory videography of crime scenes for heinous crimes and electronic service of summonses are key measures aimed at expediting legal processes and ensuring equitable justice delivery. Malik stressed the necessity for comprehensive training and forensic support teams, especially mandated for offenses carrying a sentence of seven years or more.

“These laws mark a departure from the colonial-era framework, aiming to ensure justice and equality for all,” Malik affirmed. He further noted the incorporation of provisions addressing emerging crimes such as gang rapes, mob killings, and false promises of marriage. Anticipating an increased demand for forensic experts nationwide, he highlighted the role of the National Forensic Science University in meeting these needs.

The reforms also underscore swift judicial processes, with strict timelines set for delivering trial judgments within 45 days and framing charges within 60 days, ensuring timely dispensation of justice. In conclusion, Advocate Mohd Majid Malik reiterated the significance of these reforms in upholding principles of liberty and fraternity, underscoring their role in safeguarding vulnerable populations and promoting a just society.
