JAMMU: Battle against drug abuse cannot be won by the government alone, said Dr. Pardeep Mahotra, Media Incharge, J&K BJP, adding that active public participation is imperative for building a truly drug-free society and securing the future of coming generations.
Dr. Pardeep Mahotra said that the alarming spread of narcotics among the youth has emerged as one of the gravest social challenges confronting Jammu and Kashmir. While the administration under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has launched an aggressive campaign against drug traffickers and addiction networks, society at large must rise above political, social, and regional differences to support this mission.
Dr. Pardeep stated that the "Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir" campaign has transformed the fight against drugs from a mere law-enforcement exercise into a people's movement. Referring to the recent actions taken by the administration, he said that more than 1,100 drug smugglers have been arrested, over 1,000 FIRs registered, properties linked to drug networks attached, and hundreds of driving licenses cancelled as part of the intensified crackdown against the drug menace.
Dr. Pardeep said that while strict action against smugglers is essential, lasting success will come only when parents, teachers, religious institutions, social organizations, youth clubs, and local communities become active stakeholders in identifying vulnerable youth, spreading awareness, and facilitating rehabilitation.
"Every family has a responsibility to remain vigilant. Parents must engage with their children, educational institutions must inculcate values and awareness, and society must ensure that addiction is treated not merely as a crime issue but also as a humanitarian challenge requiring counselling, rehabilitation, and compassion," said Dr. Pardeep.
Dr. Pardeep stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a "Nasha Mukt Bharat" has evolved into one of the world's largest community-driven anti-drug awareness movements. Since its launch, the campaign has reached crores of citizens across the country through awareness programmes, counselling initiatives, and community outreach, with special emphasis on protecting the youth from substance abuse.
Dr. Pardeep appealed to the younger generation to channel their energy towards sports, innovation, entrepreneurship, skill development, and nation-building activities instead of falling prey to destructive habits. He also called upon civil society organizations, panchayat representatives, ex-servicemen, women groups, and religious leaders to organize awareness drives in their respective areas and help identify individuals in need of de-addiction support.
