SRINAGAR: SKUAST–Kashmir, in collaboration with the Red Cross Society of Jammu and Kashmir, celebrated International Volunteers Day today at the Faculty of Horticulture, Shalimar.

The event highlighted the spirit of volunteerism and the collective responsibility of youth in nation-building. The program was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, as the Chief Guest. The officers of the University and faculty members including Director Finance, Haroon Ahmad, Registrar Prof. Azmat Alam Khan and Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, G.A Qureshi attended the program. 

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, quoted the example of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, emphasising that true happiness comes from helping those in need. He urged students to embrace volunteerism as a way of life and contribute meaningfully to society. He appreciated the active involvement of NSS volunteers across the University and emphasised the need to nurture compassion, empathy and a sense of duty among students.

Dean Faculty of Horticulture, Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, motivated the students to contribute in any form, be it physical work, financial support, or emotional care, highlighting that every small act of kindness counts. The Dean Students Welfare, Prof. S.A.Gangoo, in his welcome address, highlighted the significance of international volunteers Day in shaping responsible citizens.

Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society also addressed the gathering and underscored the vital role played by the Red Cross Society in reaching out to vulnerable sections of society and extending humanitarian assistance during crises.

A first Aid training program was also conducted to equip students with essential life-saving skills. The resource person, Dr. Shailendra Kaur demonstrated practical techniques for handling emergencies such as bleeding, fracture, burns and unconsciousness.
