SRINAGAR: The Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) Srinagar Chapter successfully organized a seminar to commemorate World Meteorological Day 2025, focusing on the theme “Closing the Early Warning Gap Together.” The event brought together eminent experts, researchers, and professionals to discuss advancements in meteorology, disaster preparedness, and climate resilience. The seminar was hosted online and featured insightful talks from distinguished speakers.
The Lead Talk was delivered by Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor IUST and Chairman of IMS Srinagar Chapter. Prof. Romshoo highlighted the pressing need for strengthening early warning systems in the region and the role of scientific advancements in mitigating climate-related disasters. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Scientist-D at IMD and Secretary IMS Srinagar Chapter, who was the keynote speaker of the seminar provided deep insights into the latest developments in meteorology and their implications for climate change adaptation and disaster preparedness.
Earlier, welcoming the participants, Dr. Tariq Abdullah, Head Department of Geomatics and Planning, IUST, and Joint Secretary, IMS Srinagar Chapter, emphasized on the importance of meteorological research in disaster risk reduction. The seminar was anchored by Dr. Yasir Altaf, Executive Member IMS Srinagar, and Dr. Sumira Nazir Zaz, Coordinator, Department of Environment, Sustainability, and Climate Change, IUST, and Treasurer of IMS Srinagar Chapter proposed the vote of thanks.
The seminar witnessed active participation from meteorologists, researchers, academicians, and students, who engaged in meaningful discussions on the importance of early warning systems, climate monitoring, and community resilience. The IMS Srinagar Chapter reaffirmed its commitment to advancing meteorological research and fostering collaboration between scientists and policymakers to improve disaster preparedness in the region.
