- More than 1000 trees to be planted
JAMMU: On the eve of Independence Day 2015, Senior BJP leader Yudhvir Sethi launched ‘Green Jammu Clean Jammu’ drive, here today. Nation’s Pride Jammu and Lions Club, Jammu Royal has jointly started the special plantation and awareness drive to make the city of temples more green and clean. President Lions Club Jammu Royal Ajay Kapoor was present on the occasion.
Detailing objectives of the drive, Yudhvir said that main aim of launching a month long campaign is to focus people’s attention on the importance of planting trees and to sensitize them about environment issues. He said the drive aims to go beyond the city limits and over 1000 trees would be planted all across the city and adjoining rural areas.
“There can be no better day than the Independence day to start the noble initiative of preserving State’s flora by planting more and more trees,” he added. He called upon the people to be part of the drive and contribute to the cause of preserving environment by planting trees in their surroundings. The problems of soil erosion, erratic rainfall, landslides, disturbed ecological balance and pollution are direct consequences of decreasing green cover, he added.
Underscoring on giving utmost attention to the conservation of ecosystem, Yudhvir said that the green gold has an important role in maintaining fine balance of the ecosystem and increased green cover would go a long way in preserving the ecological balance on the planet. He said monsoon season has been selected for the drive as the time is conducive for new plantations and special attention has been laid on selecting the variety of plants.
He said the drive would not stop at planting new trees only but focus would be laid to ensure proper care and attention of the planted saplings, adding that special regular watering, dose of organic manure, provision of tree guards, avoiding plants from construction waste and well-drained deep sandy soil would help plants to grow in a healthy manner.
“Today we pledge to fulfil the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji for Swachh Bharat and our aim is clean and green Jammu,” he added. While speaking on the occasion, Ajay Kapoor laid stress on planting trees and preserving environment. He called for joint efforts of civil society and administration to ensure that more and more trees are planted and special initiatives are taken to clean the city.
He said the Lion Club has always been in forefront to serve the society and during the special drive all out efforts would be made to take the message of environment conservation to every household in the city. Prominent among those who were present on the occasion include, Treasurer Lion Club Shant Gupta, Lion Parneesh Mahajan, Lion Amit Jandyal, Lion Sanjay Nagpal, Lion B.B.
