JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri has said that filing of the 737-page chargesheet by the Jammu Kashmir State Investigation Agency (SIA) in the 1990 abduction and murder case of Kashmiri pandit nurse Sarla Bhat is a right step towards justice for thousands of victims of terrorism in Kashmir.
Naming jailed former JKLF chief Yasin Malik among the accused after nearly 36 years, Suri said the investigation has reaffirmed what the displaced Kashmiri Pandit community had been asserting for decades that targeted killings and terror were systematically used to force their exodus from the Valley by militants.
Suri said Sarla Bhat's brutal murder was not an isolated crime but a grim reminder of the horrors faced by Kashmiri Pandits during the height of terrorism in 1990. "The abduction and killing of an innocent young nurse was intended to spread fear among the minority community.
Thousands of Kashmiri Pandit families were forced to abandon their homes, livelihoods and centuries-old heritage because of such targeted acts of terror. The pain of that exodus can never be erased, but justice must continue to pursue those responsible," he said.
Welcoming the SIA's investigation, the BJP leader said the filing of the chargesheet after decades demonstrates that terrorism has no expiry date before the law.
He lauded the investigators for compiling extensive oral testimonies, documentary records, forensic and ballistic evidence and other material that has enabled the agency to identify those allegedly responsible for planning and executing the crime. He said the investigation sends a strong message that those involved in terror crimes will remain answerable, irrespective of the passage of time.
Suri said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP-led government has consistently maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and has worked to reopen several long-pending terror cases to ensure justice for victims. "For decades, many families believed that the truth would never emerge. Today's development strengthens public faith that the rule of law will ultimately prevail over terror and intimidation," he said.
Appealing for speedy judicial proceedings, Suri urged that the guilty be brought to justice without further delay. He also called upon society not to forget the sacrifices and suffering of Kashmiri Pandits, stating that Sarla Bhat's case should serve as a reminder of one of the darkest chapters in Jammu and Kashmir's history. "This is not merely about one family; it is about acknowledging the collective suffering of an entire community that endured persecution and displacement. Justice for Sarla Bhat is a step towards justice for every victim of terrorism in Kashmir," he added.
