BHADERWAH: The two-day 3rd International Conference on “Change in Cryosphere and Impact on Ecosystem Services, Indigenous Knowledge System and Sustainable Development in the Indian Himalayan Region” organised by the Department of Earth Sciences, Institute of Mountain Environment (IME), Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, commenced today, with an impressive inauguration ceremony.

The conference has brought together leading scientists, policy experts, academicians, and stakeholders to discuss pressing issues related to Himalayan cryosphere changes and their far-reaching impact on environment and livelihood. Chief Guest Daleep Singh Parihar, MLA Bhaderwah addressed the audience and appreciated Bhaderwah Campus for hosting a globally relevant conference. He emphasized the government’s commitment towards environmental resilience and local capacity-building.

Prof. Rahul Gupta, Rector, Bhaderwah Campus, delivered the Welcome Address underscoring the significance of the Himalayan cryosphere in regulating ecological balance and highlighting the urgent need for scientific collaboration, integration of indigenous knowledge, and sustainable planning. The Abstract Book of the Conference was formally released, marking a key academic contribution of the event.

Guest of Honour Padma Shri Awardee Chewang Phunsog (IAS) shared valuable insights on sustainable development models rooted in indigenous knowledge and community-led conservation practices. Special Guest Prof. Sarfaraz Asghar Head of the Department Geography University of Jammu followed with an insightful address on the importance of interdisciplinary research for mountain sustainability.

Conference Convener Dr. Chhering Tandup addressed the gathering and outlined the objectives of the conference, stressing the importance of understanding climate-induced changes in the Himalayan region. The Keynote Address was delivered by distinguished scholar Prof. Sachidanand Sinha, who elaborated on climate variability, glacial responses, and their cascading effects on ecosystems and communities.

A special Presentation of mementos was held acknowledging the contributions of the dignitaries. The formal proceedings concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Shayan Javeed, Organizing Secretary, followed by the National Anthem. Adding to the academic and intellectual vibrancy of the event, renowned environmentalists and scholars from various universities across India and abroad participated in the inaugural session.

Students from the “Design Your Degree” Programme of the University of Jammu also attended, gaining valuable exposure to global environmental concerns. The teaching and non-teaching staff of Bhaderwah Campus ensured smooth conduct of the event with their dedicated support. Representatives from J&K Bank and Chinab Valley Power Project , the key financial supporters of the conference, were also present and appreciated for their continued encouragement to academic and research initiatives.
