AWANTIPORA: Continuing with the lecture series of distinguished academicians and practitioners on issues of global importance and thereby initiating students into critical thinking, IUST today hosted Prof Gautam Basu, Biophysicist and former Professor and chairman Bose Institute, Kolkata. This year’s broader theme of the lectures focusses on Bridging Science, Society and Sustainability Divide and are being coordinated by Prof Javed Hussain Mir of Mantaqi Centre for Science and Society.
Prof Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice Chancellor commended the organizers and said that the purpose of such lectures is to encourage students to know about the global challenges and develop capacities aimed at problem resolution. He said that global issues demand global consensus and encouraging youth to develop a broader perspective qua global issues has become unavoidable. He said that IUST is committed towards making an impact on society as far as developing sustainable solutions to Energy Needs, Food Security, mobility etc. are concerned.
Prof Gautam Basu in his lecture focused on relation between Art and Science driving home the point by citing discoveries that could not have materialized without the intervention of Art. He underscored the importance of integrating artistic sensibilities with scientific inquiry to foster a holistic approach to understanding and solving complex problems. Prof. A H Moon, Dean Academic Affairs welcomed the speaker and said that if the world did not wake up to the challenges of Climate change, and prioritizing of sustainability, grave consequences are staring humanity.
Prof. Mir emphasized the relevance of bringing experts from different corners of the world to speak on campus, enriching the university's academic environment. Prof. Waseem Bari, Controller of Examinations, added that this series not only brings together the brightest minds to discuss critical issues but also inspires our students and faculty to pursue excellence and innovation in their respective fields.
