SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday observed the 76th Constitution Day with solemnity and patriotic spirit, aligning with the directives of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The event aimed to reaffirm the nation’s commitment to the values enshrined in the Constitution and to deepen constitutional awareness among students, faculty, and staff.

The ceremony was held under the supervision of In-charge Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir, who also presided over the event as the Chief Guest. The programme was jointly coordinated by Dr. Ashok Kumar, Nodal Officer EBSB and Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav, Nodal Officer NSS. The occasion was attended by key dignitaries, including Institute Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman, Dean Faculty Welfare Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Ahangar, Dean Alumni and International Affairs Prof. M.A. Shah, Head, Department of Information Technology Dr. Shabir Ahmad Sofi, Dr. G.R. Beigh, Head ECE Department, Prof. Najeeb-ud-Din, Dr. Srinivas Mishra, Head MME Department, and Dr. Manoj Kumar, Faculty In-charge Sports Activity Centre.

DR (Accounts), Nazia Nazir, AR (Administration), Mubashir Ahmad Wani, AR (Accounts) Shahid Hamid Najar alongwith other administrative officer were present on the occasion. As part of the nationwide observance, an oath-taking and Preamble-reading ceremony was held. The Preamble to the Constitution of India was read aloud first in Hindi and then in English.

The collective reading provided participants with an opportunity to reflect on the core constitutional ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. In her address, In-charge Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Roohie Naaz Mir highlighted the enduring relevance of the Constitution in shaping India’s democratic ethos. “Our Constitution is not just a legal document; it is a living commitment to nation-building, social equity, and collective progress,” she said.

Prof. Roohie further emphasized the importance of constitutional literacy among young learners.  “At a time when the nation is witnessing rapid socio-economic transformation, understanding constitutional values becomes even more essential. It empowers our students to participate meaningfully in the democratic process and strengthens the fabric of our society,” she added.

Speaking on the occasion, Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman highlighted the role of educational institutions in upholding constitutional values. He said that Constitution Day offers an opportunity to reaffirm faith in the principles laid down by the framers of the nation. “Every member of this campus community has a responsibility to uphold fairness, inclusivity, and justice in their daily conduct. These values must extend beyond ceremonies and reflect in our institutional culture,” he said.

Prof. Rehman also stressed that the Constitution provides the framework within which institutions grow and thrive. “The rights and freedoms guaranteed to us are inseparable from the duties we owe to the nation. It is essential for students and scholars to understand this balance and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development,” he said.

The event concluded with a pledge to promote constitutional awareness and to uphold the democratic values that form the foundation of the Republic. Constitution Day also known as ‘Samvidhan Divas’, is celebrated in our country on 26th November every year to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. On 26th November 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India, which came into effect from 26th January 1950.

On 19th November 2015, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment notified the decision of Government of India to celebrate the 26th day of November every year as ‘Constitution Day’ to promote Constitutional values among citizens.
