JAMMU: In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability, the University of Jammu has announced restrictions on the entry of four-wheelers into its campus, effective December 5, 2024. 

The step, part of the University's green initiative , was unveiled today at a press conference by Prof. Prakash Antahal, Chief Proctor, alongside senior officials including Prof. Meena Sharma, Dean Planning and Development, Dr. Neeraj Sharma, Registrar, Prof. Piyush Malviya, Convener GCTF-JU, Dr. Deepika Slathia, Member Secretary GCTF-JU,Dr Ab. Rashid Manhas, Dr Shallu Sharma, Deputy Chief Proctors, office bearers of various associations of the University, scholar and student representatives. 

The Chief Proctor said that the University had been planning for a long time to implement this Green Campus initiative. However, the decision was delayed due to the non-availability of a designated parking slot. "Now that the parking facility is ready, the University has taken this decisive step towards a greener campus," he stated. 

The restriction on four-wheelers reflects the University’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and fostering a pedestrian-friendly campus. “This measure is aimed at ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment,” Prof. Antahal said, adding : “After extensive consultations with various stakeholders, we are confident that this step will set a benchmark for sustainability in academic institutions.” 

The University has made provisions for a smooth transition to this new system. Two-wheelers will continue to be allowed on campus, with dedicated parking spaces allocated in departmental areas. Additionally, alternative transportation modes such as e-vehicles and bicycles are being provided at designated placed to ensure convenience and accessibility for the campus community. 

As a demonstration of leadership, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umesh Rai, will also refrain from using a vehicle within the campus, emphasizing the University's commitment to this transformative change. 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Meena Sharma said, "The decision to restrict four-wheelers on the University of Jammu campus marks a significant step towards creating an eco-friendly and sustainable environment. This initiative is a reflection of our commitment to enhancing air quality, and promoting a healthier, pedestrian-friendly space for all stakeholders. With alternative transportation options, this transition ensures both convenience and environmental responsibility. I urge everyone to embrace this change and contribute collectively to making our campus a model of sustainability and green practices."

The press conference also served as an opportunity to inform civil society and the public about this transformative decision. The University appeals to all stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and the broader community, to extend their cooperation in making this initiative a success. 

The University of Jammu has consistently championed environmental sustainability through many other Green Campus initiatives like a 1095 KW grid-based solar power plant, solar streetlights, LED lighting, rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, vermicomposting, biogas plants, and solid waste management systems. The campus already promotes pollution-free alternatives like bicycles and e-vehicles, earning accolades such as the District Green Champion Award from the Ministry of Education and ISO 14001-2015 certification.
