SRINAGAR: Department of Fisheries has made a landmark achievement by raising the genetically improved germplasm of Brown Trout imported from Denmark under controlled conditions with the aim to stock the bigger sized fingerlings in open trout waters across the UT for better survival and growth.
Under the milestone initiative, in District Budgam, 20000 genetically improved Brown Trout fingerlings were stocked today in the upper reaches of Sukhnag, Doodganga and Shaliganga streams to augment trout production and replenish the fish genepool of these streams. It will also promote eco-tourism related activity of recreational fishing (Angling) as Brown Trout being the best sport fish is regarded as âAnglerâs delightâ and Kashmir is known as âAnglerâs paradiseâ worldwide for its fascinating angling destinations.
The stocking of seed was carried out at Sukhnag, Doodpathri, Brenwar and other feasible spots by Joint Director Fisheries, Gh. Mohi-ud-din Wani and SDM Khansahib, Jahangir Ahmad, in presence of anglers, civil society groups and officers/officials from the Department. The local populations hailed the efforts of the Fisheries Department for undertaking environment friendly and conservation measures of fish fauna in the pristine fisheries resources of the District.
