JAMMU: In a poignant statement, Adv. Chander Mohan Sharma, senior leader of the BJP, underscored the significance of observing June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to honor the planned murder of democracy during the Emergency imposed by the Congress government led by Indira Gandhi. Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters in Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, Sharma emphasized that this day serves as a tribute to the countless victims of government atrocities and the brave crusaders who fought against the dictatorship.
Accompanied by party leaders Shaminder Kumar, Sat Paul Rathore, and Rajinder Kumar Gupta, Sharma praised the Government of Indiaâs decision to officially recognize this day. He referenced Home Minister Amit Shahâs statement highlighting the importance of remembering those unjustly imprisoned, subjected to sterilization, and those who suffered from forced demolitions and unjust terminations.
Sharma recalled the dark history of June 25, 1975, when the Emergency was declared, leading to significant constitutional violations, including the emasculation of the judiciary and the superseding of senior judges and military officials. "The Congress government committed a historical sin to retain power, disregarding democratic principles," he stated.
With over 1.2 million political activists imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and the Defence of India Rules (DIR), the nightmare of the Emergency lasted until March 21, 1977, when the Janata Party won the elections and began releasing political prisoners. In conclusion, Sharma reiterated the commitment to honor all those who stood against tyranny and continue to uphold the values of democracy in India.
