JAMMU: To commemorate “International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women”, the Centre for Women's Studies, University of Jammu, successfully conducted the Workshop for the students of Govt. Higher Secondary School, Ghou Manhasan, Jammu today.

The keynote speaker for the event was Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu. She spoke on the theme “Legal Safeguards regarding Violence against Women”. In her lecture, she gave details regarding the various forms of violence against women and the legal safeguards like POSH Act, Child Marriage Restraint Act, Dowry Prohibition Act, Domestic Violence Act, POCSO Act etc. available to deal with these issues. She also deliberated on the difference between sex and gender and how gender is constructed and practiced in the society.  

Emphasizing on the role of education as one of the most important foundations for the growth and development of young students, she asserted that the roles we perform as male and female in the society are the life skills and it is through these knowledge and skills our values, attitudes and overall direction of life is learned. Further, she stressed on building confidence and creativity which will help the students to learn about right and wrong, respect for others irrespective of gender. She asserted that awareness is the key and these types of workshops help in creating gender sensitization among all irrespective of gender.

Sh. Kuldeep, Senior Lecturer, Govt. Higher Secondary School, Ghou Manhasan, Jammu, in his address applauded the efforts of the Centre for taking this initiative.  He also spoke on the need of gender sensitivity among students which is required to be inculcated in the early years of life. Further, he stressed that students are the future leaders of the society and they must understand gender biases to create a more equitable environment. In his address, he  congratulated the Centre for such efforts and requested to have future collaborations with school on other relevant issues related to gender concerns.

Large numbers of teachers, office staff, and students participated in the workshop very enthusiastically and shared their personal experiences. Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty member from Centre for Women’s Studies conducted and coordinated the proceedings of the event with Diksha Sharma, Academic Mentor from Bharti Airtel Foundation. The workshop concluded with the formal vote of thanks by Dr. Disha Sharma.
