ANANTNAG, BARAMULLA: Continuing its sustained drive against narcotics and illegal cultivation under the ongoing anti-drug campaign, Police destroyed illicit poppy cultivation by registering several cases in Anantang and Baramulla.

In Anantnag, Police carried out the destruction of illegally grown poppy at village Batagund, Verinag. The action was undertaken by Police Post Verinag in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. The illegally cultivated crop was destroyed on the spot as per procedure. In this connection, Case FIR No. 76/2026 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Dooru and investigation has been taken up.

In Baramulla, acting on reliable information, a Police party of Police Station Tangmarg along with NT Hariwatnoo, officials from the Excise Department and Agriculture Department conducted a joint operation in the area. During the operation, illegal poppy cultivation spread over agricultural land belonging to one Abdul Ahad Malik son of Gh. Qadir Malik resident of Pandithpora Bala, Tangmarg was identified and destroyed on the spot. Samples of the poppy plants were seized and sealed on the spot in the presence of the Magistrate for legal and forensic purposes.

Similarly, Police destroyed illicit cultivation of poppy plants at village Pariswani, Kunzer. During preliminary enquiry, it came to light that the land belongs to Ab Ahad Reshi son of Abdul Rahim Reshi resident of Pariswani, Kunzer, where the illegal cultivation was being carried out. Acting promptly on the information, Police Station concerned registered FIR No. 62/2026 under relevant sections of NDPS Act and investigation was taken up. During investigation, the illicit poppy plants were destroyed on the spot in the presence of the Magistrate and officials from the Excise, Revenue and Agriculture Departments, strictly following the prescribed legal procedure.

Police reiterates its commitment towards eradicating the menace of drugs and appeals to the general public to cooperate with Police by sharing any information related to drug peddling or illegal cultivation in their areas.
