• Says Rajiv Gandhi strengthened Panchayati Raj and led India towards computer revolution

JAMMU: Chairman of JKPCC Kissan Congress, Bharat Priye, on Monday appreciated and warmly welcomed the decision to rename the renovated Congress headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu, as “Rajiv Bhawan” in memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

In a statement issued here, Bharat Priye described Rajiv Gandhi as a visionary leader who laid the foundation for modern India through democratic decentralisation, technological advancement and empowerment of rural institutions. He said the naming of the Congress office as Rajiv Bhawan is a fitting tribute to a leader whose contributions transformed the political and developmental landscape of the country.

He stated that Rajiv Gandhi played a historic role in strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions across India and worked tirelessly to ensure greater participation of people at the grassroots level in governance and decision-making. According to Bharat Priye, Rajiv Gandhi firmly believed that democracy becomes stronger when power reaches villages, farmers, labourers and common citizens directly.

The Kissan Congress Chairman said that the former Prime Minister initiated revolutionary reforms aimed at empowering local self-governance and bringing transparency and accountability into the administrative system. His vision later paved the way for constitutional strengthening of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the country.

Highlighting Rajiv Gandhi’s role in India’s technological transformation, Bharat Priye said that he was among the first national leaders who recognised the importance of computers, information technology and modern education in shaping the future of the nation. At a time when many people were hesitant about technological advancement, Rajiv Gandhi introduced computer education and encouraged digital modernisation, which eventually became the backbone of India’s emergence as a global IT power.

He said that today’s digitally connected India stands as a testimony to Rajiv Gandhi’s far-sighted vision and progressive policies. His contribution towards youth empowerment, modern communication systems, science and technology continues to inspire generations, he added.

Bharat Priye further said that the renovated Congress headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk symbolises not only the organisational strength of the party in Jammu and Kashmir but also its continued commitment towards the ideals of democracy, secularism, social justice and inclusive development championed by Rajiv Gandhi.

He expressed hope that Rajiv Bhawan would emerge as a centre for constructive political dialogue, public welfare initiatives and service to the people, especially the farmers, labourers and weaker sections of society.Several Congress workers and supporters also welcomed the renaming decision and termed it a respectful homage to one of the youngest Prime Ministers of the country, remembered for his modern outlook and commitment towards building a strong and progressive India.
