- Sets roadmap for 100% Source Segregation and Scientific Waste Management
JAMMU: In a major push toward achieving the vision of a "Garbage Free City" under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today announced that Ward No. 20, Gandhi Nagar, has been identified for transformation into a "Model Ward". This initiative, part of the region-wide Swachhata Excellence Campaign 2026, aims to establish a gold standard for 100% household waste segregation and sustainable processing.
Commissioner JMC, Dr. Devansh Yadav (IAS), stated that as the first step toward scientific waste management, the JMC is implementing a strict new collection protocol to ensure that segregation is practiced at the source. Under this plan, wet waste will be collected daily, while dry waste collection will transition to an alternate-day schedule, specifically on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This structured approach, overseen by Dr. Devansh Yadav, is designed to streamline the waste value chain and maximize the recovery of recyclable materials through a circular economy.
A key highlight of this initiative is the emphasis on household-level responsibility to implement the best practices of the Swachh Bharat Mission. Residents of Ward No. 20 are being encouraged to manage wet waste through home composting wherever possible, reducing the burden on city landfills. These successful strategies and best practices established in Gandhi Nagar will be replicated in the Roopnagar, Sainik Colony, and Sidhra areas of Jammu in the near future to ensure city-wide sustainability. Meanwhile, segregated dry waste will be directed toward processing centers to be integrated back into the circular economy through recycling.
“Segregation is the most critical intervention in the entire waste management process,” stated Commissioner JMC. “By turning Ward No. 20 into a Model Ward, we are not just cleaning a neighborhood; we are creating a blueprint for the entire Jammu and Kashmir region. However, the success of this mission depends entirely on the active support and partnership of our citizens.”
The JMC will deploy dedicated Community Mobilizers and IEC teams to provide door-to-door guidance on using color-coded bins and maintaining these new habits. This initiative serves as a call to action for every resident to recognize their responsibility in keeping Jammu and Kashmir clean, green, and sustainable. With the collective efforts of the public and the municipal corporation, Gandhi Nagar is set to lead the way in environmental excellence for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26.
