JAMMU: The recently concluded session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in Srinagar proved to be utterly unproductive and disappointing. With barely any legislative business conducted, the government’s planning for the session stood exposed as a complete failure. No meaningful initiatives for public welfare were undertaken, said Girdhari Lal Raina, former Member of the Legislative Council and spokesperson of BJP J&K–UT.
The only redeeming feature, said Girdhari Lal Raina, was the successful conduct of the Rajya Sabha election, where members voted in accordance with their conscience and their vision for the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
Raina strongly criticized the Omar Abdullah–led government for its poor planning, casual attitude, and indifference toward issues concerning the common people. He noted that rather than focusing on legislative business, the government appeared more intent on silencing the opposition, particularly the BJP legislators who raised key matters of public interest.
“Instead of engaging in meaningful debate on crucial issues such as relief for flood victims, rampant corruption, and continued discrimination against Jammu region, the government sought to divert attention through slogan-shouting and disruption,” Raina observed.
He further said that the same non-serious approach was evident in the government’s evasive replies to questions raised by MLAs, especially those from the opposition benches. Many members accused the government of deliberately avoiding discussion on vital issues that directly affect the people.
Raina concluded that after this short and unproductive session, the government has nothing tangible to showcase as an achievement, once again highlighting its failure to uphold legislative responsibility and public accountability.
