SRINAGAR: Janata Dal (United) President for Jammu and Kashmir, G.M. Shaheen, on Tuesday strongly criticized the Omar Abdullah–led government, accusing it of failing to meet public expectations and worsening the hardships faced by the common people across the region.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters in Srinagar, Shaheen said that despite tall promises, the government has failed to provide free or adequate electricity from local power projects, leaving people to suffer under mounting economic and domestic pressure.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir expected relief and development, but instead they are facing inflated tariffs and poor supply. Our region produces power — yet our own people remain deprived of it,” Shaheen remarked.
He further expressed deep concern over the government’s mismanagement of the Road Transport Corporation (RTC), which he said continues to run at heavy losses while no effective steps have been taken to promote tourism or create sustainable employment opportunities for youth.
“We are talking about new power projects while the RTC bleeds financially and tourism stagnates. There is no serious roadmap for job creation or economic revival,” he said.
Criticizing the government’s priorities, Shaheen alleged that several legislators seem more focused on increasing their own salaries and privileges rather than addressing the real issues of unemployment, inflation, and public welfare. He urged Omar Abdullah to learn from the previous administrations led by Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who, he said, “at least implemented some people-friendly measures.”
Expressing concern over the detention of several youth, Shaheen appealed to the Chief Minister to personally take up the matter with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and ensure a fair review of these cases. Shaheen added
“Many of our young people continue to languish in jails without any review petitions being sent to the MHA. The Chief Minister must intervene immediately to ensure justice and reintegration of these youth into society,” he urged. Shaheen reiterated his party’s commitment to raising the voice of the common people and demanded immediate action on these pressing public concerns.
