JAMMU: Reacting to the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) recent searches in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Ladakh in connection with a major gold smuggling racket, J&K BJP spokesperson Dr. Tahir Chowdhary welcomed the probe and urged the agency to intensify its investigation in Jammu and Kashmir as well.
Dr. Chowdhary praised the ED’s action in uncovering a sophisticated smuggling network that allegedly brought over 1,000 kg of foreign-origin gold worth ₹800 crore into the country through the India-China border, with transactions carried out via cryptocurrency channels. He noted that such cross-border criminal activities threaten national security and economic stability.
In a statement, Dr. Chowdhary urged the central agencies to extend their search operations to Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the region’s proximity to sensitive border areas and its vulnerability to similar smuggling operations. He also recommended that the investigation cover regional political outfits to ensure that no local networks are aiding or facilitating such illegal operations.
“Gold smuggling is not only an economic crime but a matter of national security. We fully support the ED’s probe and urge it to expand its searches in Jammu and Kashmir, especially focusing on potential local networks and political elements that may be exploited by transnational criminal groups,” Dr. Chowdhary said.
He further asserted that the BJP stands firmly against any criminal or anti-national activity and would extend its cooperation to ensure that the entire chain behind such smuggling operations is dismantled. The ED’s ongoing investigation into the racket, which allegedly involved Chinese nationals, Tibetans, and local facilitators, has already led to detentions under the COFEPOSA Act and seizures of gold worth hundreds of crores.
Dr. Chowdhary’s call for a deeper probe underscores the BJP’s commitment to safeguarding the region against external threats and criminal exploitation. Investigations into the matter are still underway, with authorities working to trace the full extent of the network.
